Don't trust him. Are people who drive large luxury sedans sleezebags? Maybe*. Big physical spaces can breed dishonesty, finds new research in Psychological Science.
In one experiment, testers who drove a car with a roomy seat were significantly more likely to double park and hit and run during a simulation as drivers in smaller seats. And people who were told to sit with their legs apart and hands on their hips were more than twice as likely to keep money that didn’t belong to them as those who sat with their arms and legs crossed.
Here’s why: Studies show when you occupy an expansive environment like a large desk or driver’s seat, or if your posture is open, you feel more powerful. That boosts your sense of control and dominance, both of which are associated with dishonest behavior, says study coauthor Andy J. Yap, Ph.D., of Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Wait a second—your boss has a giant desk, and he’s always standing with his hands on his hips like he’s Superman. Worried he may not be a straight shooter? Check his eyes. People tend to look up to the right to visualize or invent a response, and down to the right to invent sounds, says non-verbal behavior expert Marc Salem, Ph.D. We recall truth by looking up or down to the left, Salem says.
