Bold beats boring. Men who like trying new experiences and activities say they’re more satisfied in bed and on the job than guys who play it safe, says new research from Harris Interactive and Schick Hydro.
In a poll of more than 3,500 young men (ages 18 to 34), 58 percent of guys who describe themselves as adventurous considered their sex lives to be very satisfying compared to 31 percent who take it easy. Plus, 51 percent of daring dudes say they’re more successful than other men their age, versus only 33 percent of guys who claim to be tame.
Obviously it wasn’t a scientific poll, but if you fall in the 53 percent camp of men who describe their daily lives as boring, you could stand to learn a thing or two from the adventurous crew on Clean Break, which just kicked off its second season on Fuel TV. After all, a recent study in the Journal of Health Psychology found that extreme sports boost your mental makeup. But don’t worry if you can’t skydive or scale a cliff like the guys on the show—here are three easier ways to spice up your life.
Order off the menu. Let the waiter or chef choose your meal for you—especially if you don’t consider yourself an adventurous eater. “When I was at The Bazaar [a restaurant by celeb chef José Andrés in Los Angeles] I tried a caprese salad with mozzarella balls that simply melt in your mouth like cotton candy,” says Peter Isacksen, executive producer at Content & Co, which created Clean Break. “Without the encouragement of the sous chef, I would have never ventured into molecular gastronomy and totally felt outside my comfort zone, but this was the most incredible culinary moment of my life.” You’ll come across delicious opportunities and learn about foods you didn’t know you’d like.
Book a last-minute trip. The Harris poll results reveal that simply traveling outside of the U.S. for vacation boosts confidence, happiness, and life satisfaction. If you’ve got a couple days to spare, sites like Travelzoo.com and Jetsetter.com offer time-sensitive deals so you can plan a spontaneous vacation. “It really forces you to live in the moment,” says Clean Break contestant Hal Hardy, who jumped on a plane to New Zealand with less than 24 hours’ notice. “You can’t micromanage this like a trip planned months in advance,” he says. “Just throw your clothes in a bag, get to the airport, and see where the next adventure takes you.”
Become a yes man. Succumb to every suggestion for the entire weekend. Guys who show excitement in daily life (79 percent) are way happier than the folks who describe their days as dull (39 percent), according to the poll. Whether your buddies want to schedule an impromptu morning tee time or your girlfriend asks you to trek to Ikea, just go with it. Need ideas? Check out Zozi.com, a site that offers deals on everything from adrenaline-packed adventures (whitewater rafting) to less intense activities (glass blowing). The key is to leave your comfort zone to engage in activities that disrupt habits. Bonus points if you find a partner in crime. “Novelty gives relationships that extra kick,” says psychologist Tania Luna, co-owner of Surprise Industries, a company that plans spur-of-the-moment excursions. Growth happens when you physically feel uncomfortable—but spontaneity is a life skill necessary to prepare you for the unpredictable, she says.
